Time flies when you are having fun! We have completed the Social Thinking segment for most of the groups, and have moved on to the mechanics of speech-how we actually make sounds. Of course, we are always mindful of our social language, so we incorporate social thinking into all of our lessons. The last few weeks we have been talking about how we use our voice appropriately. The interns are given concrete ideas on how to recognize if their voices are too loud or too soft, and also for those who love to talk like movie characters, when that is OK and when it is not OK. We also provide practice for loudness and tone of voice. Take a look at the attached summary of our power point, and also the loudness chart. If you have a child who falls into the too loud, too soft, or silly/movie voices category it may give you some talking points and strategies.
Parents, Caregivers and Staff Members can use the attached 'cheat sheet,' to help guide your child/intern using the questions and vocabulary when they are struggling in a social situation. For example, if they are upset about an unplanned schedule change, you can tell them you need them to be a 'flexible thinker' at this moment. This helps clearly explain what you would like them to do, rather than label behaviors you don't want to see. The questions help them reach the correct answer independently rather than being told how to answer. You can also use the vocabulary to praise and reinforce appropriate behaviors: "I noticed you were really thinking about others when you saw your friend looked sad and you asked him if he wanted to talk." It's so much nicer to be the 'good guy', noticing great behaviors than correcting the bad ones! :)
